Bag of Hope for Newly Diagnosed Children

                                        Picture
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has a comprehensive collection of educational and supportive materials called the Bag of Hope.  This friendly "kit" has been underwritten by Roche Diagnostics and is designed for the parents of children with diabetes.

The Bag of Hope is a backpack, branded with the JDRF logo, and the words "JDRF - Bag of Hope".  Bags of Hope contain a variety of educational and comforting support materials-some geared to the child, and some geared to their caregivers-the most popular of which is Rufus, the Bear with Diabetes, but also includes a support video/DVD, children's books, and an Accu-Chek Blood Glucose Meter.

The Bag of Hope is completely free of charge and available only from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  If you live in the JDRF Inland Empire Chapter Area (Riverside and San Bernardino Counties of CA) and would like a Bag of Hope sent to you please click below on the request form.

                                        School Advisory Toolkit

                                        Picture
JDRF has introduced its School Advisory Toolkit as part of an extensive program to increase the awareness of the special needs of children with type 1 diabetes in the classroom and to support parents and school administrators. All students with type 1 diabetes need a strong support network at school to help them properly manage their type 1 diabetes on a daily basis. Cultivating good relationships with school staff is key.

The JDRF School Advisory Toolkit helps parents and school personnel ensure that students with type 1 diabetes have the best possible school experience. The Toolkit was written by a retired school administrator who is also the parent of child with diabetes. As a result, it helps parents and school personnel understand each other's points of view, as well as the needs of students with type 1 diabetes.

                                        The School Advisory Toolkit includes:
                                        • Practical information on everyday medical needs
                                        • Helpful charts with information on low and high blood sugar symptoms
                                        • Steps to prepare substitute teachers for students with type 1 diabetes
                                        • Tear out sheets and sample tools for the classroom
                                        • Real-life scenarios to help parents obtain a better understanding of schools' legitimate concerns and needs when a student has type 1 diabetes

                                        Clinical Trial Information

                                        Picture
Human clinical trials are the final phase of research done before a new drug or treatment is approved for the market. Many tests are conducted before the clinical trial stage to determine whether potential treatments are appropriate for testing in people. It is through clinical trials that new drugs, therapies and ultimately, a cure for type 1 diabetes will be discovered.

By participating in a JDRF-funded clinical trial, you play an important role in the fight to treat and cure type 1 diabetes. The decision to participate, however, is very personal and should be made only after speaking with your health care provider and other individuals you trust. You can stop participation in a clinical trial at any time if new concerns arise or you lose confidence that its potential benefits outweigh its risks.  The National Institutes of Health (NIH) ClinicalTrials.gov Web site answers some of the most frequently asked questions about these studies.
